how 3d printing is going to influence the building process ? we thought about: 1. 3d printing can allow designers to come up with an highly complex shapes that are hard to manufacture by hand. 2. it allows architects to control the production ( if they have a 3d printer. like we do) 3. some things are better left for the traditional ways of making things. 3d printing is more for the complex shapes. integrating both ways is interesting This 3d printing experiment was done as a part of the Overops office design .It is a decoration for the office main eating space. we used a 3d printed joinery and a simple straight wood planks to make a complex shape. This object has 22 x 2 (mirrored) different joinery. about 50 X 2 wood planks with different length . The idea was to use the potential of 3d printing, that allows you to print an accurate complex shapes, as many as needed ,without a repetition in the process. Each joinery was shaped specifically to the wanted angel and amount of planks needed to be attached. We used autodesk's maya as a designing tool. all joinery were printed using a small and simple 3D printer. the longest print was about 15 hours while the shortest was about 5 hours. while all of the complexity of this object came out of the 3d printer, all the wood planks were made in as a simple as possible sawing process, with as simple as possible carpenter, in as simple as possible carpentry shop.
